It’s different in 9B.
Jacksonville gardens are mostly in USDA 9B. Now. As of November 2023 we have been reclassified. For years, we’ve been 9A. But of course, there are microclimates, with brick walls or wind tunnels, and those can vary average temperatures to where you have no idea what’s going to survive in your yard!
A determining factor is the overnight temps. That’s really what matters for us here. When are the average overnight in the 50s, the 60s and the 70s – and for how long? Know your USDA code before you buy plants!
Sure there’s a little frost, every now and then, but rarely do plants die all the way completely. Neither do the pests, bacteria and fungi. It’s quite the experience gardening in Jacksonville, FL. Probably unlike anywhere you’re tried to turn soil into a garden before!
